Introduction & Reviewer Context
Before diving into this review of Ozark I think it's important to provide some context regarding my personal gaming background and preferences. I am primarily a fan of action RPGs, high-intensity action titles, and atmospheric action-adventure games. Some of my favorite titles include Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Elden Ring, God of War, The First Berserker: Khazan, The Last of Us etc. I have played a handful of horror games and tactical shooters and I rarely play co-op games but this game provides the option for single player and I’m here to share my experience.
My review of Ozark is also available in video form in case you prefer that. And you can also find full playthrough of the game on my YouTube Channel.
OZARK is a dark, story-driven 2.5D tactical action-horror game developed and published by the three-person indie studio ALTER-BOY. Designed for short, high-tension playthroughs lasting 3–6+ hours depending on difficulty and playstyle, OZARK caters to players looking for a focused experience without a 20+ hour commitment.

Gameplay & Exploration: Tactical 2.5D Side-Scrolling
OZARK blends old-school side-scrolling action with modern tactical choices and survival-horror exploration. The game offers flexible tactical approaches: move carefully, utilize cover, and stay quiet to avoid detection, or trigger alarms and face waves of aggressive hostiles head-on.. Additionally, the campaign supports full two-player co-op locally or online via Steam Remote Play Together, requiring only one player to own the game.
What I liked particularly well is in higher difficulty you really had to be careful about how you used your resources and that brought the right tension to the game. You do get a pistol that has infinite ammo but good luck with that as some enemies take a lot of time to go down with it.
The game offers a range of resources to pick from. Your character has 4 status levels that you need to pay attention to apart from health and stamina.
1. Hunger
2. Thirst
3. Toxicity
4. Fatigue
Paying attention to these is critical as it dictates how well you do when you are out in the field and the resources that you use to boost these stats have an impact on other status in most cases.
The game offers stealth and head-on approach. You can go all in with the guns but there are times when enemies sound the alarm and you are swarmed by them, pick your strategy carefully!
As for exploration, the game is linear and it makes sense for a short game where the goal is survival and to have fun with your buddy in co-op but the game still manages to create some good exploration avenues making you backtrack at times to ensure you can go forward.
The game also offers a very good puzzle section and has 1 dedicated act for it and solving them without any help was fun.

Combat: Strategic, Intense, and Methodical
Combat in OZARK emphasizes resource management and positional awareness. Heavily inspired by classics like Shadow Complex alongside atmospheric horror influences from Dead Space and Resident Evil, firefights require calculated cover usage and precision rather than mindless run-and-gun shooting. Managing encounters while managing limited supplies beneath the facility keeps tension high throughout
You get an Axe for melee combat and stealth takedowns. You get a shotgun, pistol and a rifle to carry you through this mystery land as well. The guns felt very responsive and managing bullets is key to survival.
The thing that I didn’t enjoy was that you can only reload the bullets that are on you and once you run out of them you will need to go to your back pack and equip more bullets for your guns.
Aiming is also tricky and it’s understandable for 2.5 d game, the game tries to auto aim for a brief moment but if there is any explosives in the line of sight then you might hit them and end up killing yourself in the process, I did that to myself quite a few time, especially in early game.
There are a few enemy variety types while some of them appear a lot throughout the game, there are a couple who appear less frequently or maybe even once or twice but they help keep the fights refreshing.
Just remember, how you use your resources will be key to your survival and the game has 6 difficulty modes so you have options to show your skills!

Versus Mode
Now I also want to talk a little bit about Versus mode in the game. Just so you know that I did not try this mode in the game but I want you all to know what is on offer.
Ozark has 8 versus mode that you can choose from, and they are:
Crash
The Shift
Shaft
Breach
Reactor
Water Way
And 2 more modes unlock after you finish those I guess. Note that this is a beta feature in the game.

Audio, Visuals & PC Performance
Visuals & Art Direction: I thought the art style and atmosphere of the game was to the point. Strong 2.5D environmental detail and atmospheric lighting that heighten horror and claustrophobic dread in underground facilities. The fact that you can’t see more than your screen until you scroll forward really adds to the atmosphere of the game.
The game lets you change the color of your suit as well as your guns and you can unlock it by progressing in the game.
Audio: The in game music was excellent, well for the 1st hour that I played with music on. I had to turn off the music and restart the game just to avoid any copyright issues for posting my recordings on my socials. From my little experience I could tell that the game music was very well done and elevated the overall vibe of the game.
Performance: Built on Unity engine for PC via steam, Ozark performed flawlessly throughout my playthrough and I did not encounter any bags or frame drops or anything as such. I do have high end specs but I feel it's safe to say it will work well on even low settings.
Story & Narrative: A Fight for Survival Beneath the Mountains
What begins as a routine search-and-rescue mission takes a horrifying turn when you crash-land in the remote mountains of Northern Canada. Following a lost signal into a seemingly abandoned facility, what was supposed to be a rescue quickly transforms into a desperate struggle for survival. As you venture deeper into the complex, you uncover macabre human experiments, hostile forces, and the dark mystery buried deep beneath the earth.
The game does well in slowly opening up the narrative of the game and keeps some good surprises for you until the very end. Most of the game’s story & lore is told through audio logs and dialogues between characters but since there is not a lot of focus on cinematics, it felt like I was just listening to an audio log as well when the characters were interacting.
From end to end the story held good and there were no acts that felt like they were wasting my time. You will get to play a total of 7 acts in the game and an Epilogue.

Final Verdict & Recommendation
OZARK delivers a tight, memorable 2.5D action-horror package ideal for fans of tactical shooters and horror classics. With a focused campaign length for 3-6+ hours, robust co-op mechanics, and high-replayability tactical combat, it stands out as an impressive creation from developer AB collective.
With $10 tag and intense gameplay I highly recommend OZARK for solo players or co-op pairs looking for an intense horror experience in a single sitting or 2. And with multiple co-op game modes you can always revisit the game for some extra fun with your friend.
My goal is to bring you latest gaming news, info, clips and conversation through various platform, be it X, Insta, Tik-Tok, youtube or this blog, where I share my in-length reviews and gaming opinion with the hope that it resonates with some fellow gamers.
