Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced Review - Pirate All the Way

It's important to know a little about the reviewer before you read their review.
I never played original Black Flag game, I mean I was planning to lately but then I found out that remake is in works so I decided to play and play the Remake. I generally gravitate towards Action RPG and action Adventure games. I played this game on my PS5.
Story
Lately, AC games have let me down a little bit when it comes to story and characters so I did not have high expectation with Resynced but while playing the game I realized that how good Ubisoft writing use to be. You instantly onnect with all the characters and then there are few new characters too and while the internet says they are not good, I found them to be as effective as any. Great dialouge delivery, great animation work and each character had a solid background story!
As for story, it doesn't get better than this - A man's dream to succeed in life so that he can give the luxry of life to his loved ones - How does it all play out? well that's why you need to play the game and you wont be dissappointed. Take a piece of advice, do all officer's quest to rule the seven seas!
These 3 officer quests are the new quests in the game and if you onboard them then they grant you spell powers to your ship which heavly turns the tide of the battle in your favor!
Gameplay
Man, while Crimson Desert was addicting for its exploration, this game was addictive for its ship battles! There is something about destroying ships - taking them over - and then deciding whether to spare enmies or kill them!
While the game is a lot more then that but I constantlyfound my self raiding any ship that came across me, but it's not easy to start with and that's where the gameplay loop gets interesting. In order to makes things easier you need to upgrade your ship with coins and some other resources, how do you get those resources? well by raiding more ships and of course through some other activities too. Primarily, this hook of uprading your ship and coquesring the seas captures you and you just don't want to let go. I enjoyed my time with a lot!
Now ofcourse there are other layers to gameplay too which includes elements like parkour, stealth combat, head on combat, looting enemy camps for resources, bounty hunting assissination targets and Trading across the seas.
While most of the above are self explanatory, let's talk about trading. In this game Edward - our protagonist - captures various forts in the game through a mix of Naval combat and land combat - when you do that it opens up a trading rout in that zone, there are mutiple forts like these and mutiple zones. Once unlcoked, you can send your ships that you have captured tfor trading and gather coins and resources. There are 10 slots of ships that you can own and there are 4 different kind of ships but let's not dive into that and leave it for you to discover.
Overall, the gamplay is very engaging and i fund my self to be hooked in to it playing numerous hours back to back.
Combat
Combat had a lot of varitey. You play as Edward and some of the abilities that acquire for combat is hidden blade assasination, a sword to do a pary and doge centrice combat - which was a lot of fun, a grappel hook to pull enemies towards you, a smoke bomb to dissapea, a dart to put enemies to sleep or rage and a couple more. With all these abilities combined the whole combat felt increible - Kicking enmies out of the enmy was my favorite!
You can also explore and find differnet types of sowrds for Edward and each one of them come swith unique abilities, so go on and experiment with what you would like the best for me I chose a sword that could parry the red attacks too!
I did experience that parry was not really working well when there were mutiple enemies surrounding me, I played the game in hard difficulty and found sometimes that if the focus changes from one enemy to to the other and the unfocused enemy attacked then my parryies were not landing most of the times but it might as well be the case of timeing so take this one witha pick of salt.
Perfromance
I feel like AC games are some of the best perofrming games at launch, espesially on console and Resynced was no exception. There were issues for PC at launch wher they locked cutscenes at 30 FPS by mistake but It has been fixed since then.
I played the most of the game on my PS5 on performance mode and I had no issues and the game looked mind blowingly good while doing that!
The goal here is not to compare the Black Flag with the Resynced but to evaluate whether the game in itself can stand on its own.
I've played a lot of Assassin's Creed game and enjoyed some of them but I like to keep my expectations in check when it comes to AC games. Will this exceed my expectations? let's dive in!
What Needs to Improve?
- I felt that Edward's walk felt floaty and I even made a post about it on X and many seem to agree. But I must say, after a few hours it didn't bother me as I got used to it.
- Parrying an unfocused enemy felt broken such that it was hard to land those parries but it could just be tht my timing was off.
- I wish I didn't have to collect the musical notes to unlock more sea shanties - it was a pain and then I din't care for it after a while.
- Microtransactions for a copule skins, the coolest ones.
What I loved!
- Sea battles with your ship
- Ship upgrade loop
- Multiple options to defeat a boss
- Exploring the islands
- And finally the overall story - superb!
Verdict
I enjoyed my time with Resynced and it did whatever it sought out to do very well. The game looks gorgeous and combat felt good. It has a very addictive gameplay loop and and a facinating story of a man's ambition which is worth checking out in my opinion.
Part of me wonders, did I like it because it was a pirate game or is it because it's an Assassin's Creed game!? What do you think?
